Tui Na

Tui Na has been practised in China for more than 4,000 years and now becoming known in the West.
The name Tui Na comes from Chinese and conveys the vigorous nature of this hands-on healing system 'Tui' means 'push' and 'Na' means 'grasp', it works not only on the muscles and joints but also at deeper level affecting the flow of vital life energy in the body.

This technique applies pressure to channels carrying 'Qi' the body's life energy supplying the tissues and organs. The aim is to ensure Qi flows smoothly around the body restoring emotional and physical balance.

Tui Na is performed by the therapist using hands, fingers, arms and elbows to perform the massage.
It is vigorous and energetic, and works on deep tissues to release knots (blocked areas).

Tui Na is done over clothing as the technique does not require the use of oils, so loose fitting comfortable clothes is advised to wear so movements of joints can go through a full range of motion.

Tui Na can help with:

  • Treat muscular, bone or ligament problems
  • Tight muscles
  • Sciatica
  • Muscular spasms
  • Neck, hips, shoulder, legs, knees, ankle and back pain
  • Respiratory, and digestive
  • Head pain and migraines
  • Insomnia

The massage will usually be focussed on the most common areas of muscle tension build-up; the neck, shoulders and back.

Some of the more vigorous techniques may be initially uncomfortable before the muscles start to fully relax.

However, they should never cause unbearable pain.

Tui Na should leave you feeling pleasantly relaxed and invigorated.  Since Tui Na rebalances the flow of Qi as a whole, the mind and emotions are also affected. Mostly this causes you to feel contented and revitalised.
However, this powerful technique may also release blocked emotional energy, in this case you may feel emotional or even weepy following the massage.

Tuin Na is a very safe therapy.  However, any form of massage may be unsuitable for people with certain health conditions. These include:

  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • Oesteoporosis
  • Skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis or shingles affecting the area being massaged

Futhermore, massage over areas such as the abdomen and lower back are also contraindicated in pregnancy.
